StripFile FAQ

My files only compress by a few bytes.

Sometimes I can't view a file after StripFile has compressed it.

I've compressed a folder, but can't see the backups.

StripFile isn't compressing my files, even though I know they contain redundant data.

The Log Window doesn't contain details on every file I've stripped.

I select several files in Explorer, right-click on them and choose "Strip", but the program doesn't tell me how many bytes it has saved.

My files only compress by a few bytes.

You're not alone -- three out of four people won't see much improvement in the size of their graphics files. A typical GIF file will compress by 8 bytes, unless it has a comment, and typical JPEG files will shrink by somewhere between 18 and 73 bytes each. Of course, that may still be significant for a high-traffic site.

StripFile should still be able to help shrink your HTML pages, however, and 40% improvements are relatively common.

Sometimes I can't view a file after StripFile has compressed it.

Removing chunks of data from any file is potentially risky. We test extensively to avoid the risk of files being corrupted, but it's impossible to rule this out.

If you do find a file that can't be compressed, or that StripFile appears to have corrupted, then try tweaking the program Settings. Clearing "Remove white space" should prevent spacing issues in HTML files, while checking "Preserve initial JFIF marker" may help create a readable JPEG file. See the program Help for more guidance.

I've compressed a folder, but can't see the backups.

When you compress a folder on the desktop (or from within Explorer), StripFile creates a folder at the same level to store your backups. So if you compressed the folder C:\LevelA\LevelB\LevelC, StripFile would place backup files in a new folder, C:\LevelA\LevelB\Stripped LevelC.

StripFile isn't compressing my files, even though I know they contain redundant data.

If you're compressing files from the desktop or Explorer using the right-click "Strip" option, try working from within StripFile instead. The Log Window may display an error message that explains what is going on.

Note also that if you turn off all the compression options (that is, go into Settings and clear all the boxes), then StripFile won't be able to reduce your file sizes. Check the Settings dialog to make sure it's set up correctly.

The Log Window doesn't contain details on every file I've stripped.

You've noticed that?! Unfortunately the Log Window has a limit to the amount of data it can contain, and if you are compressing lots of files the initial information "scrolls" off the top of the list. This isn't a high priority to fix, but we might do it if enough people care. Email support@nuetools.co.uk and let us know what you'd like (a text file log, perhaps?)

I select several files in Explorer, right-click on them and select "Save", but the program doesn't tell me how many bytes it's saved.

When you do this, Explorer launches multiple copies of StripFile, each one working on a separate file. If the program reported how many bytes it had saved, this would produce a separate dialog box on your screen for every selected file -- hardly convenient. We may address this later, but it's not a priority at the moment.
